Aleph

Gesaffelstein - 2013

Mike Levy, also known as Gesaffelstein, has had a pretty prolific year, culminating with the work of his on Kanye West's newest album Yeezus, and Aleph draws a heavy influence from songs like I'm In It and Send It Up. However, it seems that some of the French producer's best work was left for Kanye, instead of his own releases. Because of this, Aleph is an album that takes the listeners through massive highs and massive lows. On tracks like the G-funk-acid house fusion that is Hellifornia, by far the best track on the album, and first single Pursuit, Levy is on the top of his game, creating catchy, interesting, banging music for the listener. But there are also some real clunkers on here, such as the screechy Wall Of Memories and the sleepy Piece Of Future. Cutting this album down to 8-10 tracks would put it up with the best electronic albums to come along this year (Settle, Overgrown, Guilt Trips), but some forgettable songs pull the entire project down heavily. Favorite songs: Hellifornia, Obsession Least Favorite songs: Out Of Line, Wall Of Memories most overrated song: Hate or Glory most underrated song: Hellifornia
