Arctic Monkeys - 2013

I like the first few tracks of this album. "R U Mine", the first single, is one of my favorites. After the first third of the album it's mostly just bland corporate rock. Most of the issue I have with it is the production and mixing. It has that punchless rock sound of the most recent U2 albums. A lot has been written about them ripping off Black Sabbath, and they do quite a bit. From the obvious rip of the "War Pigs" riff, to the hyper Bill Ward style floor tom fills, to the Tony Iommi trills, it's obvious that the AM were borrowing from the mighty Sabbath. I'm totally fine with that. What irks me is how weak and bland the band sound at times when they're doing it. I know they're a pop band at this point in the guise of a rock band, (again with the U2 comparison), so I shouldn't be as turned off. They do write some good hooks though, and overall it's not a bad listen. The perfect 3 star album.

this doesn't compete with the sheer enjoyment I got when listening to the Monkeys' first two LPs. Maybe the most disappointing record this year.

The only thing worse than ripping off a riff is ripping off a review! Fantano called and he wants his check! Okay, so you don't appreciate Turner's melodies and brilliant lyricism. I'm totally fine with that. What irks me about these comments from two rap fans is that you're missing the hip-hop influence on this record! What other rock band has been able to draw from modern R'n'B without sounding completely bloody awful! The Arctic Monkeys continued to develop their sound on AM. It's just a shame that casual listeners can't recognize their artistic growth. Forget it. I'll leave you to your beloved Yeezus. By the way, I spoke to Nick about this and you're both on the naughty list. #KanyeForPresident

First off, Fantano hated this this album from start to finish. I like it, so you're wrong there. I'm not sure what else he said about it, since I haven't seen his review since he posted it. Secondly, if you read my Yeezus review you'll see that I didn't think it was all that great. It's compelling though, in a way that most of this corporate rock doesn't even attempt to be. I bought you reading glasses for Christmas and a copy of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.
