M.I.A. - 2013

M.I.A. is a big tease. Just when you think you have a handle on what type of artist she is, she takes a u-turn and heads in a different direction. She has the ability to be a pop star, but she likes to push to many buttons to play that game. Many of those buttons she’s pushing are in the studio. She’ll throw reggae, dance music, rap, and whatever else she feels like all at you in the same song. It’s what makes her music polarizing, but also what makes it hard to resist. Much like Kanye’s 2013 release “Yeezus”, there’s so much interesting stuff going on in these songs that they compel you to come back over and over again. It’s not a perfect album by any means, but when you try to throw as many ideas into one album as she does, that’s no surprise. It’s also a little long at 15 tracks, one of which being an alternate version of “Exodus” called “Sexodus”. (Not necessary, especially since "Exodus" is better) Overall though, it’s a really fun hour of music, with new things revealing themselves each listen. Try “Atention” & “Only 1 U”.

I think there should be links in reviews to other people's reviews of the same album. Just a thought. I dislike M.I.A. which is why I have chosen this album review to comment on something that has nothing to do with her. Hopefully it will distract people from the album. You are welcome, world.

Now you're just trying to make this thing more complicated for me.
