OWL Trio

Lage Lund, Will Vinson & Orlando Le Fleming - 2013

This is musical simplicity at its best and most beautiful. There is not much to be said about OWL Trio outside of the facts of the album. Three musicians (Lund on guitar, Vinson on saxophone and Fleming on upright bass) that have been playing together for years in various bands but never in the trio set-up, get asked by a music producer to come together and record at a former church in Brooklyn all because the music producer, Jimmy Katz, thinks the acoustics would lend themselves to the intimate setting that a trio with their specific instrumentation would provide. The guys go, they blow eloquently through standards by the likes of Ellington, Coltrane and others. Katz records the tunes all in one or two takes and from that arrives this album. The playing lacks an agenda which gives it an honesty. They don't need to impress each other as they have been playing together for years, They certainly are not trying to impress an audience as it is unknown if they knew there was going to be album in mind for their recording session. The result of their time together is simple, genuine music and playing that somehow manages to have extreme substance to it. Sit back, relax and allow yourself to get lost in these laid back conversations between good friends.
