Bothers And Sisters Of The Eternal Sun

Damien Jurado - 2014

Damien Jurado is a folk singer from Seattle who apparently either started doing mushrooms, or got really into his 70’s vinyl collection. If the title "Brothers And Sisters Of The Eternal Sun” brings to mind a psychedelic world dreamt up while on hallucinogens, you’re probably right. The album cover sets the scene. It’s a desert oasis, with a strange glass dome in the middle. Damien is in the foreground heading towards it. Is it left there by aliens? Is it a dream? Why are there 5 songs with the word “silver” in the title? I have no clue, and I’ve listened to the album five times according to my iTunes play counts. While the themes are kind of ridiculous, and quite ambitious, the production is really intriguing. Producer Richard Swift helps Jurado channel reverbs and echoes that bring to mind Pink Floyd or The Blue Oyster Cult. This is not a folk album, although you hear the folk roots in songs like “Silver Katherine” and “Silver Joy". Most of the album is awash in psychedelia, such as in “Silver Timothy” and “Silver Donna”. There are interesting grooves scattered throughout the album, which makes for a really interesting listen, despite the confusion about what’s happening musically. It’s definitely worth a listen.
