Oxymoron

ScHoolboy Q - 2014

Of all the members in sudden rap powerhouse label Top Dawg Entertainment, ScHoolboy Q is the weird one. He switches vocal registers, has his toddler-age daughter on his record saying "Fuck Rap.", and owns way too many bucket hats. On 2012's excellent Habits and Contradictions, that weirdness was in full force, but on this new LP, Oxymoron, we get less obtuse and more hard-hitting. In some cases (phenomenal opener Gangsta, the seven-minute, half brutally honest, half ignorant Prescription/Oxymoron) it's a perfect compliment to the direction Q looks to go in, but the lack of oddness seems to hurt Q on lighter tracks (Los Awesome, Collard Greens), because of his sudden refusal to have fun in his raps, and spit in that high, early-Eminem sounding voice that made previous tracks like Hands On The Wheel and There He Go (from H&C) so great. Instead, we get the same low grumble over the entirety of these almost radio singles. Oxymoron could've been a perfect balance of hard-hitting and fun, radio-ready rap. If only. Favorite Songs: Break The Bank, Gangsta Least Favorite Songs: Hoover Street, Hell Of A Night Most overrated song: Collard Greens Most underrated song: Prescription / Oxymoron

No problem. I've got five more reviews (three new, two classic) on deck.

Nice. Looking forward to them! I have a few that I need to write and I may do some classics soon too.
