Alvvays

Alvvays - 2014

Molly Rankin had it made. She would grow up without a care, and join the legendary roots band The Rankin Family, giving herself a surefire career in music and a comfortable living. But, Molly is a textbook millennial, more interested in trying new things then worrying about a way of life. That love of adventure shows in the music that she writes with her band Alvvays, which produced easily the best indie record in 2014. It's anthemic music for days at the beach and parties. It's somber music for post-breakup sadness, and driving music for long road trips all alone. But above all, Alvvays is an album for Rankin's kin, the downtown-living late teens and early 20 year olds that feel the world caving inwards on themselves, pressured to carry an economy destroyed by their parents and grandparents when just a few years ago they had to ask to go to the washroom. Rankin gives those kids someone to relate to, and a voice that they can listen, laugh and cry to, precisely because everything she sings about they've experienced themselves.
