Sea Change

Beck - 2002

Sometimes the best thing for a songwriter's career is to get his or her heart broken. Beck took his heartbreak and crafted a masterpiece of sorrow. Nigel Goodrich produced the album, mixing Beck's folk songwriting, with lush strings that could have easily been overdone in the heavy hand of another producer. Instead, Goodrich complements the songs and brings them to a new level, while never drowning Beck. For me, this is the album where he got it all right. There's no kitchy hooks, or contrived theme, just a man and his sadness.
