A Moon Shaped Pool

Radiohead - 2016

It’s not totally surprising that Radiohead would make a phenomenal album, since they are one of the greatest bands of all time, but I haven’t LOVED one of their albums since Kid A. I can’t believe that I just typed that. In fact, I just checked my iTunes to make sure that I wasn’t missing anything. Amazing though, I’m correct. It’s been since 2000 that Radiohead released an album that could make the upper half of my annual top ten list. Just to be clear, I have liked plenty of their work, just haven’t fallen in love.
As I’ve obviously implied, 2016’s A Moon Shaped Pool has finally broken that streak. It hits on most of the band’s strengths, while sounding unlike any of their previous albums. Thom’s vocal melodies, and Jonny’s arrangements stand out on AMSP, as does the return of some actual guitar parts! (not The Bends level guitars, but for a Radiohead album, it’s a good amount)
Highlights for me are the lead single “Burn The Witch”, with it’s driving string punches, “Indentikit”, which feels like the most Radiohead-ish of songs on the disc, with it’s rhythmic foundation and familiar lyrics/vocals, and the whole vibe of “The Numbers”.
More than anything it comes down to songs. I always do land back on that, regardless of genre or artist.
