The Harrow & The Harvest

Gillian Welch - 2011

Gillian Welch has always been different than her Bluegrass contemporaries. Actually calling them contemporaries seems strange, because there's almost nothing contemporary about Welch. Her music takes you back to a dusty era of Bluegrass/Country/Folk of decades ago. Sparse production on the album keeps it intimate and focused on the brilliant songwriting. As per usual, she is accompanied by guitarist David Rawlings throughout the album. Musically the two of them are an extension of each other. His guitar work is masterful from start to finish, but what always strikes me about the two of them is how their vocals harmonies blend. The two voices seem like one, and while this is Gillian's album and songs, you really couldn't have them without Rawlings. - ("The Way It Goes" is one of the songs of the year)
