Yeezus

Kanye West - 2013

I had to wait quite a while before I’d let myself write this short review. I didn’t know what to make of Yeezus upon the first listen. Is it genius? Has Kanye’s ego finally won the battle with his talent and just spewed an album of hip hop wanking? The answer lies somewhere in between for me. I consider Kanye’s 2010 release, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”, to be one of the best albums of the last decade. The production is masterful, with it’s infectious beats, clever samples, and well used guest spots. In order to like Kanye’s music you need to be willing to buy into the messianic complex. It’s part of his charm. (not the right word for him, I know) Yeezus is supposed to be his, “I’ll do whatever the F I want to and still sell out arenas” album. He purposing made the production very dissonant and sometimes a difficult listen, with distorted beats, odd transitions, and lack of traditional hip hop grooves. Sometimes this”experimentation” works to great effect, and sometimes it feels forced. Lyrically, I feel he was trying to hard on this one. Production has always been Yeezy’s thing, lyrics/rapping second. The tracks where he tries to make social statements about race, etc. just don’t work so well. The one exception is “Black Skinhead”, which is the best song on the album, with it’s “Beautiful People” style drum groove, and solid production. For each hit on Yeezus, there's a miss as well. "Bound 2" kind of sucks, with that weird flow Kanye uses on some slow songs. I’ll say this, the album kept me coming back for repeated listens. It wasn’t even a choice. It’s an intriguing album that deserves the effort.

It won't be a classic. There are too many other rappers who have done this sort of thing. (he's the most popular, so it is noteworthy, don't get me wrong) If it was a truly groundbreaking sound then it could be a classic, even if misunderstood. I'm going to revisit 808's because I know you love it. Maybe a review is in order!

Liked this one as I too was somewhat baffled by what it was doing to me and my opinions of it with every listen. It is my belief that this one will either turn into a classic or head to the discard pile with this judgement not coming for years. (I would take 808s over Twisted Fantasy)
